A pit bull mix scheduled to be euthanized in North Carolina has found a new home with actress Stockard Channing, who adopted the puppy through Sagaponack-based Gimme Shelter Animal Rescue on Sunday.
Channing, best known for her role as Rizzo in “Grease,” was “heartbroken” when she was forced to euthanize her elderly pit mix Fanula just two weeks ago, says Gimme Shelter director Michelle Montak.
Shortly after losing Fanula, Channing reached out to Montak in search of a new dog. And that same day, Montak received a plea from an animal shelter in Duplin County, North Carolina, looking for someone willing to take in Kony, a 1-year-old pit mix that was scheduled to be euthanized.
After hearing from Channing, Montak, who said she receives hundreds of requests from animal shelters looking to find homes for their dogs, began scanning through emails, when she came across a picture of Kony.
“After looking at his picture, I just got this feeling that this was the right dog for [Channing],” she said.
Montak immediately got on the phone with the New York City-based actress, who she said took one look at the puppy and told Montak, “Oh my God. We have to save this dog.”
Gimme Shelter arranged to have the dog transported from North Carolina to New Jersey, where the puppy — renamed Benny — met his new owner for the first time on Sunday.
“It was really touching,” Montak said. “He really took to her right when they met. And she says that for a country dog, he’s settling in beautifully in the city.”
A spokesman for Channing did not respond to calls seeking comment Tuesday.
