When an employee at a Riverhead retirement community spotted one of its trucks on the road Sunday, the worker knew it had to be stolen, Riverhead Town police said.
That's because the Glenwood Village employee knew the truck was unregistered and was supposed to be in a storage area there, police said. The employee, whom police did not name, followed the vehicle until the driver pulled into a driveway on Middle Road in Riverhead, and called police.
The path led to Terry M. Smith, 55, who police said was driving the truck that belonged to the retirement community for residents 55 and older.
Smith was arrested and charged with one count of criminal possession of stolen property in the third degree, according to police.
After his arrest, police discovered that Smith is on parole, officials said.
