Consider this a chance to go to jail without being arrested.

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is holding an open house and family day Sept. 17 at the county jail in Yaphank.

The free rain or shine event features tours of the jail for ages 12 and over. It is being held as part of the 23rd annual New York State Sheriff’s Week, from Sept. 17 through Sept. 23.

The week celebrates the contributions made by county sheriff’s offices in county government and in the statewide criminal justice system.

In a news release Thursday, Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco encouraged the public to attend the open house and family day to learn more about his office’s “unique role” and the services it provides to Suffolk residents.

Also included in the event will be the sheriff’s emergency response team demonstrations, an aquatic robot, exhibits, giveaways, games and snacks.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot of the Yaphank Correctional Facility, at 200 Glover Dr. in Yaphank.
