Four people were taken to the hospital after a two-vehicle crash near the entrance to Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove on Wednesday night, officials said.

Suffolk police said the crash happened on Middle Country Road at about 7 p.m.

Nesconset Fire Department Chief James Keane said one car was turned over on its side, and a male and female occupant were "severely entrapped" and had to be extricated. They suffered serious injuries and were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, Keane said.

Two people from the second vehicle also were taken to the hospital, Keane said. He did not know their conditions.

A photographer at the scene said the crash happened just east of Moriches Road.

Keane said Middle Country Road is still closed in both directions near the entrance to the mall.

No further information was immediately available.
