Suffolk reconsiders medical examiner term limit

A legislative resolution filed by Suffolk Executive Steve Bellone's office, naming Michael Caplin to a 6-year term as medical examiner ending June 30, 2020, may give him a tenure 17 months longer than legally allowed.

Under state Public Officers Law, Caplan is only eligible to finish the rest of predecessor Yvonne Milewski's term, ending Jan. 31, 2019. County Attorney Dennis Brown said the charter lists a 6-year term for medical examiners without mentioning vacancies.

Since questions have been raised, he said, the administration is considering a charter amendment.-- Rick Brand
