Truck driver dies in crash involving 2 school buses

A three-vehicle crash involving two school buses in Mastic Beach killed a truck driver Monday, Suffolk County police said.

Neither bus had students on board.

Jose Gonzales, 32, of East Patchogue, was driving a 2004 General Motors van southbound on Mastic Road about 6:45 a.m., according to police, when he rear-ended a school bus stopped at Clinton Avenue. That bus hit the back of another stopped bus.

Preliminary reports were that "black ice" on some Suffolk roads could have caused the accident. However, Lt. Gail Marrero of the Seventh Squad said although she could not rule out black ice as a cause, "no information from the parties involved indicate such conditions."

Gonzales was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The bus drivers, both wearing seat belts, were treated there for head and neck injuries.
