Truck driver killed in North Haven crash

The driver of a box truck died Thursday after his vehicle veered off a North Haven road and struck a tree, police said.

Charles F. Edwards, 56, of Calverton, was pronounced dead at Southampton Hospital about two hours after the crash, police said.

Southampton Town Police Det. Sgt. Lisa Costa said there were no obvious reasons why Edwards might have lost control of the vehicle.

Investigators are awaiting a medical examiner's report to determine if he suffered any sudden health problems before the accident that might have contributed to crash, police said.

Edwards was driving the truck, owned by Helen's Greenhouses and Flower Farm of Aquebogue, south on Ferry Road (State Route 114) near Fahys Road about 12:30 p.m., police said, when the truck went across the roadway and struck a tree.

The driver's area of the truck crashed into the tree, police said, and Edwards suffered serious injuries. He was taken to the hospital by the Sag Harbor Village Ambulance, police said.

Southampton Town police asked that anyone with information about the crash contact them at 631-702-2230 or through the Southampton Crime Tips hotline at 631-728-3454.
