A careening commercial truck crashed into two vehicles, injuring four motorists, on Sunrise Highway in Holbrook Tuesday night, Suffolk police said.

Two westbound lanes closed by the 6:06 p.m. crash between Exit 51 Nicolls Road and Exit 53 Route 112 reopened shortly before 8 p.m., police said.

Police said the driver of the truck lost control and hit a Ford Mustang traveling in the right lane. The truck then crashed into the rear of a pickup, landing on the vehicle's bed, police said.

A motorist passing the crash scene said she saw there mangled vehicles.

"Holy cow," the witness said. "The truck was literally in the back of the pickup truck and smashed through the cab of the pickup."

The driver of the pickup was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The driver of the Mustang, a passenger in the commercial truck and a passenger in the pickup were taken by ambulance to local hospitals, where they were also being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Other details were not immediately available.

The truck's door displayed the name of a Bay Shore steel company. No one at the company could be reached Tuesday night.
