Two-car crash critically injures Port Jefferson Station woman, 70

A two-car crash critically injured a 70-year-old woman in Centereach Monday, police said.

Elizabeth Basta, 33, of Deer Park, was driving a 2014 Infinity Q50 northbound on Mark Tree Road when she crossed into the southbound lanes, south of Nesconset Highway, and struck Jennie Giordano, 70, of Port Jefferson Station in her 2000 Nissan Maxima around 8:50 a.m., Suffolk police said in a news release.

Giordano was transported by Setauket Fire Department Rescue to Stony Brook University Hospital where she was in critical condition. Basta was also transported to Stony Brook University Hospital where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Representatives from the fire department were not immediately available Monday evening for comment.

Stony Brook University Hospital officials said shortly before 7 p.m. that Giordano remained in critical condition and Basta was in fair condition.

Both cars were impounded for safety checks, police said. Suffolk County Police Sixth Squad detectives are continuing to investigate, police said.
