There will be a wake for Bednar, an avid sportswoman and outdoorswoman, who taught physical education at Birch Lane Elementary. It will be held at Chapey Fredrick & Son Funeral Home at 200 E. Main St., East Islip, Tuesday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. and on Wednesday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and from 7 to 9:30 p.m., Blum said.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Bednar's memory to Community Options' iMatter surf camp for children with autism: 10 Barbara Dr. in Succasunna, N.J. 07876. Bednar was a longtime volunteer for the camp.
