Alyssa Frazier spread warmth this winter in the form of coats -- lots of them.

Over a one-month span, the West Islip High School freshman collected 147 coats, the most gathered by any of the school's students, in an effort coordinated by the Student Senate. The coats were donated to the Wyandanch Food Pantry.

Frazier said she went door-to-door handing out fliers to neighbors and explaining the importance of donating gently used coats.

"If you haven't worn it in a while, then why not consider donating it to someone who would appreciate the warmth?" said Frazier, 14. "Not everyone is as fortunate as us."

After the first day that Frazier spread the word, members of the community brought enough coats to her house to fill three big bags, she said. Her parents dedicated a room to the garments' storage.

When the month concluded, Frazier's father took the coats to the high school and social studies teacher Ed Jablonski recruited students to help carry them in.

"I told him that I had too many and couldn't carry them inside by myself," Frazier said.

Frazier is secretary of West Islip's Class of 2015 and a member of the Student Senate. She also plays flute and piccolo.
