Fire chief: West Islip woman suffers burns in kitchen accident

A West Islip woman was burned on over a quarter of her body when a boiling pot of potpourri spilled on her Thursday afternoon, fire officials said.

The woman, whose name and age was not released, was transported in stable condition with "burns over 25 percent of her body" to Stony Brook University Hospital, said West Islip Fire Chief George Baxter.

The woman called 911 about 5:08 p.m. and said a pot of potpourri she had on the stove "started boiling over and it splashed on her," Baxter said.

Her teenage daughter had minor burns and was also taken to the hospital, the chief said.
