Westhampton Beach cop helps deliver baby at home, police say

A police officer in Westhampton Beach helped deliver a baby at a home in the village early Friday morning.

Officer Gennaro DeScalo was called to a home on Sunset Avenue at 5:59 a.m. after a woman who was more than 30 weeks pregnant reported irregular contractions and severe pain, village police said.

When DeScalo arrived at 6:03 a.m., it was too late to get the woman to a hospital.

The baby was born seven minutes later, police said.

Westhampton Beach paramedics evaluated the mother and baby before taking them to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. Both appeared to be healthy and doing well Saturday, police said.

DeScalo joined the force in February, the department said.
