A 73-year-old Brookhaven woman is under arrest, charged with driving while intoxicated, after police said she struck and seriously injured a 19-year-old woman riding a scooter Tuesday night in Bellport.

The woman, who was with her sister, 15, and male friend, 22, at the time of the accident, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with what Suffolk County police termed "non-life-threatening injuries." Her condition was not known Wednesday.

Police said the crash occurred at about 9 p.m. on Bellport Lane. They said the trio, riding skateboards and a scooter, was headed southbound on Bellport Lane when the 19-year-old was struck by a 1999 Volkswagen Passat station wagon driven by Helen Geraghty.

Police said a subsequent investigation determined Geraghty was drunk and she was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

Geraghty is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in First District Court in Central Islip.
