Woman faces DWI charge in Coram crash

A 27-year-old woman was arrested and charged with drunken driving after police said her vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic early Thursday morning on Route 25 in Coram, seriously injuring another driver.

Barbara Nitti of 861 Charles Pond Path, Coram, was arrested after the 1:30 a.m. crash, charged with driving while intoxicated, Suffolk County police said.

The driver of the other car, identified by police as Lillian Fernandez, 68, of Coram, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries, police said.

Nitti also was taken to Stony Brook with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police said the crash occurred when Nitti, driving a 1994 Ford sedan westbound on Route 25, crossed into the eastbound lanes about 300 feet east of Old Middle Country Road -- crashing into the car being driven eastbound by Fernandez.

Nitti faces arraignment in First District Court in Central Islip upon her release from the hospital. Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to call Sixth Squad detectives at 631-854-8652.
