Suffolk police Sunday identified a female pedestrian who died after being struck by a car in a Copiague parking lot as Valentyna Todorovych, 55, of Lindenhurst.

Police earlier had said the victim was hit by a 2001 Honda Civic just after 4 p.m. Saturday as the car backed out of a space in a parking lot at 870 Merrick Rd.

The driver stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake and struck the woman before damaging three other parked vehicles, police said Saturday. The woman was pinned beneath the car, police said.

“Several people lifted the vehicle off of the woman before emergency service personnel arrived on scene,” Suffolk police said in a news release Saturday.

An ambulance transported the victim to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, police said, where she was pronounced dead.

Police did not identify the driver of the Civic, who was not injured

The car was impounded for a safety check, police said.

Anyone with information is urged to call detectives with the First Squad at 631-854-8152.
