Woman saves drowning man on Fire Island

A West Babylon woman, with assistance from authorities, rescued a drowning man from the waters off Fire Island Sunday afternoon, police said.

Marcos Cruz, 24, was swimming in the Atlantic in the Cherry Grove area of Fire Island not patrolled by lifeguards, when he started struggling to stay afloat about 1:48 p.m., said Suffolk County police.

Another beachgoer, whom police identified as Christina Lang, 48, saw Cruz struggling, got in the water and helped keep him afloat. Authorities, meanwhile, sent a line out to the pair and pulled them to shore.

Marine Bureau Police Officer Robert Cappadona, a member of the department's Medical Crisis Action Team, and firefighters and Fire Island National Seashore lifeguards administered first aid to the swimmers.

A Suffolk County Police helicopter airlifted Cruz and Lang to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where both arrived in good condition, and were treated and released, a hospital spokesman said. Neither Cruz nor Lang could be reached for comment.

The Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau, Cherry Grove Fire Department and Fire Island National Seashore lifeguards assisted in the rescue, police said.
