Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano on Tuesday gave a check for $10,000, raised by David Lerner Associates, to the Nassau County Police Benevolent Association’s Geoffrey Breitkopf Fund, for the sons of the slain officer.

Breitkopf, 40, a decorated, 12-year veteran of the Nassau police department and a member of its elite Bureau of Special Operations, was killed March 12 while responding to a crime scene in Massapequa Park, where he was shot by a Metropolitan Transportation Authority officer in a friendly fire episode.

“Officer Breitkopf’s sacrifice will never be forgotten, and this fund will help to make sure his loved ones are taken care of,” Mangano said after thanking Lerner, who attended the ceremony at the County Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola along with Nassau Legis. Rose Walker (R-Hicksville).

Breitkopf’s widow, Paula, and sons Connor, 6, and Owen, 3, who live in Selden, did not attend.

Lerner, of Manhasset, head of a major financial investment company, said every year his firm “sponsors the Long Island Police Appreciation Run . . . [that] generates financial support for the Police Crisis Fund, which was designed to aid officers’ families, like Officer Breitkopf’s.” This year’s run is scheduled for June 9 in Eisenhower Park.
