East Meadow is named for its location, according to the hamlet's Chamber of Commerce website. In 1655, Thomas Langdon reported at the Hempstead Town meeting that he surveyed the "East Meadow" and found it suitable for the grazing and watering of cattle. (March 12, 2012) Credit: Nicole Bartoline

The New Year’s Eve Dash, sponsored by Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano, the Long Island Marathon and the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, will take place on Dec. 31.

The event — which will be held at Eisenhower Park, on Hempstead Turnpike and Stewart Avenue in East Meadow — will raise money for the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.

Large video screens will display the ball-drop in Times Square, and at the stroke of midnight, the participants will begin the 5k race. After completing the race, participants will cross the finish line into a New Year’s Eve Party, complete with buffet-style food, drinks, DJ entertainment and dancing until 2 a.m.

The race is open to all participants 6 years of age and older. Participants should arrive no later than 30 minutes before the midnight start. Locker rooms, restrooms, water and sports drinks will be available.

The registration fee is $68 and includes the 5k Race and party.
