A cool 1,000 turn in their old fridges

The Long Island Power Authority announced Monday that 1,000 customers have now taken advantage of a refrigerator recycling program started in March.

In the program, LIPA picks up old refrigerators and hands them over to American Appliance Recycling Centers of America Inc. to be recycled.

Customers get $35 for turning in their fridges. An extra $75 rebate is given to people who purchase new Energy Star-rated replacements.
