The Long Island Farm Bureau and other agricultural organizations will kick off a campaign to get consumers to buy produce, flowers, wines and other products produced locally, with a farmers market at the Suffolk County Farm in Yaphank on Aug. 5.
The event will be from noon to 5 p.m.
As part of “Celebrate Grown on LI Day,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy will hold a news conference asking Long Islanders to buy local products.
Farm Bureau executive director Joseph Gergela said farmers have been struggling economically, particularly from the rising cost of oil products, including gas, fertilizer and farm chemicals.
The campaign will include radio ads and public service announcements on TV encouraging shoppers to support local farmers.
