Amityville beach vendors say location doesn't bring enough business

When Amityville Village trustees learned this spring that the Sandy-damaged snack bar at the municipal beach wouldn’t open for summer, they decided to bring in Nathan’s Famous and Kona Ice trucks instead.

The beachgoers wouldn’t starve, and the vendors would pay the village $250 a month apiece for the right to feed them $3.50 hot dogs and $2.50 snow cones.

But Nathan’s no longer comes and Kona comes only on weekdays, with owners of both franchises saying there wasn’t enough business.

“I didn’t come close to breaking even on any one day,” said Marc Martilotta, of Mamaroneck, who owns the Nathan’s truck. He said he needed to make about $250 a day to reach that point, and rarely came close. On his best day he took in $185 and on his worst, just $56, he said. He pulled out after July 5.

Kim Beymolla of North Babylon, who owns Kona Ice of Long Island along with her husband, Shaun, said her business has gotten a little better since then, but that it’s still not much of a moneymaker. “It’s a small beach, a small village, and not many people have access to it,” she said.

Village-run swimming and sailing lessons have always been the main draw at the beach, but attendance has declined in recent years, said Amityville trustee Dennis Siry.

He said the village has no plans to bring in other vendors this summer but hopes to operate the snack bar again next year.
