The area now known as Bay Shore was purchased from the Secatogue tribe in the early 18th century by John Mowbray. He paid the tribe in eel spears, according to local historians. The area was called by various names: first Penataquit, then Awixa, then Mechanicsville and back to Penataquit before it officially became Bay Shore in 1868. (Feb. 4, 2011) Credit: T.C. McCarthy

A veterans group plans to host a free Christmas toy giveaway and lunch for those affected by superstorm Sandy this Sunday.

AMVETS Post 76 is hosting its first "Christmas With Santa" event Sunday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 44 Main St., Bay Shore.

The event, which organizers said is open to any needy families, will feature Santa Claus, who will be handing out donated toys to children. A lunch of baked ziti and chicken fingers will also be served.

"There's so many people that have been displaced after Sandy, we're just trying to reach out to the community and veterans," said John Massaro, the post commander.
