Benefits counseling for senior veterans

Benefits counseling for veterans older than 65 will be offered Tuesday at Long Island Cares’ Hauppauge food pantry.

Veterans and their spouses will receive assistance in applying for federal pension benefits at 2 p.m. at First Stop Food Pantry, located at Long Island Cares’ warehouse at 10 Davids Dr. The seminar will last about two hours.

The program will focus on the Department of Veterans Affairs’ “Aid and Attendance” benefit, which offers up to $1,842 a month to pay for care at home or at a nursing home or assisted-living facility.

Counseling will be offered by attorneys from the Melville law firm Genser, Dubow, Genser & Cona, which specializes in elder law and estate planning.

Appointments are recommended. Call 631-582-3663 or email jrosati@licares.org.

Long Island Cares runs special programs for veterans from noon to 4 p.m. each Tuesday at its Hauppauge and Freeport facilities. The program, called Military Appreciation Tuesdays, provides food for veterans and their families while connecting them with services.
