A Bethpage resident who teaches mathematics in Queens won a prestigious teaching award Thursday.

Sabaa Zickria-Daly, who teaches algebra, earth algebra, and  a subject called Math Across the Curriculum at the Queens High School of Teaching, won the Sloan Award for Teaching Science and Mathematics. The school is in Bellerose.

According to a news release, recipients are chosen by an independent selection panel of distinguished scientists, mathematicians and educators for demonstrating “exceptional skill, incomparable creativity in and out of the classroom, and unparalleled passions and commitment.”

Zickria-Daly is credited with using math to explain global warming to her students and making it fun by using math to solve crimes. 

Each recipient of the award receives $5,000 personally and $2,500 is given to each winner’s school to strengthen its science or math programs.
