Roberto Clemente Park pool in Brentwood will be closed this summer while the town repairs and rehabilitates the aging pool’s filtration system, town officials announced Wednesday.
Earlier this year, residents from the northern Islip community objected when they discovered the town had cut funding for the Brentwood pool and Casamento Park pool in West Islip from its 2013 budget, citing a projected $26 million shortfall. But Casamento Park pool will remain open this summer, according to the town’s news release, which details the summer hours of operation for its pools and beaches.
After residents, community activists and civic leaders protested the slated pool closures at several town board meetings throughout the winter, the board announced it had found grant money through its community development agency to make repairs to the crumbling Roberto Clemente Park pool, and would work on securing public-private partnerships to find funding to run both pools in the future, and have at least one of them open by Memorial Day.
Casamento Park pool will be open June 29 through Aug. 17 from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., the release states.
