Developers who want to remake the historic Canoe Place Inn, along with 40 condos on the other side of the Shinnecock Canal, asked for a short-term delay before the Southampton Town Board votes on it.
The plans by Gregg and Mitchell Rechler were scheduled to be heard Tuesday by the town board, but the hearing was delayed after the request.
Jim Morgo, a consultant for the developers, said they are still processing the considerable feedback the most recent proposal has gotten from the community.
“We’re asking for time to digest everything we’ve heard,” Morgo said. He said the developers couldn’t commit to making any changes in the development.
Liz Surozenski, a member of the Concerned Citizens of and Around Shinnecock, which formed in August to protest the plan, said it could be a positive development.
“I’m curious to know what they’ve got,” she said, noting that now the board won’t vote on it until after November’s election, which could remake the dynamics on the town board.
A number of community groups have supported the Rechlers’ plans because it would preserve the Canoe Place Inn, which hosted politicos and celebrities between the 1920s and 1940s.
But residents protested the density of the 40 units on 4.8 acres, planned for the east side of the canal. The Rechlers said those homes are necessary to pay for the Canoe Place Inn rehabilitation. Neighbors have also expressed concern with a sewage-treatment facility planned near there. The hearing will be on Dec. 10, the board decided Tuesday night.
