Car fire delays elementary school start in Commack

A car fire Friday morning in the parking lot of the North Ridge Primary School in Commack delayed the start of the school day as students were rerouted to the high school while the fire was extinguished.

Donald James, superintendent of the Commack School District, said in a statement that the car fire was discovered at the far side of the parking lot as buses were pulling into the school. He said students were kept on buses, and a staff member boarded each bus to assist the children.

The buses were sent to the high school, where they remained for about 20 minutes while the Commack fire department put out the fire.

Once back at North Ridge, students were escorted back to their classrooms to start the school day at 9:50 a.m. The school day is normally scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m.

James said the school’s Halloween Parade will take place as scheduled at 2:30 p.m.
