A three-vehicle chain-reaction accident occurred at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday on southbound Nassau Boulevard near Newmarket Road in Garden City.

A Nissan Altima apparently went out of control and crashed into a Mercury, a pickup and then a tree before coming to rest on its side. The driver of the Nissan was transported to Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola with minor injuries; the other drivers were not injured.

“The driver in this case is very, very lucky from what we see,” said Lt. Vincent Thorn of the Garden City Police Department. “There was about 12 to 15 feet between the tree on the lawn and the truck. If it had hit the truck or the tree directly, it would have been much more serious.”

The Garden City police and fire departments were on the scene, and southbound Nassau Boulevard closed for an hour while the vehicles were removed from the road.
