Hicksville United Methodist Church will turn up the volume next month to help others.
The church is hosting two fundraising concerts for its participation in Group Workcamp, a Colorado-based nonprofit that specializes in home repair and community service worldwide.
Seventeen young people will head out July 10 for a week-long trip to Keansburg, N.J., a beachfront community whose locals are struggling to repair their homes after a harsh winter. Susan Jensen, the church’s Group Workcamp coordinator, said United Methodist is working to offset the $450 per student cost.
The first fundraiser, at 5 p.m. on April 2, is geared toward teenagers. Bands ranging in age from middle school to college will play music from the power pop, Christian and progressive metal genres. The groups include RTC., MOTP, LIACT's, Shudder, Workhorse, Sound Parade and Screaming in Silence. On April 9 at 8 p.m., G Strings and Amethyst Roxx will perform dance hits from the ’60s to today.
Jensen said her son, Dylan, a senior at Hicksville High School, has been going on Group Workcamp trips since 2008. He is going again this summer, then intends to study some form of environmental science at C.W. Post in the fall.
“It’s amazing,” Jensen said. “All I know is every year they come back, and they love it.”
Last year, the church’s volunteers worked on repairing trailer roofs in Spring Grove, Pa. Each year the volunteers spend their days fixing homes, and their nights in social activities. Group Workcamp volunteers stay in a local school or church during their trip.
For the April 2 event, adult tickets are $10, and students can get in for $5. On April 9, tickets will be $10 for adults, $5 for children 13 and under, and $25 for a family. Hicksville United Methodist Church is located at 130 W. Old Country Rd.
