Assemb. Phil Ramos (D-Central Islip) and several local community groups will be holding a citizenship clinic in Brentwood Sunday to assist people who are interested in applying to become U.S. citizens.
“It’s a chance for people to participate in decision making for their personal future and the future of their community by voting,” Ramos said. “A lot of people spend many years as residents when they can become citizens. By joining this effort to convert people into U.S. citizens, it gives them more earning power and gives your community more earning power.”
Immigration Legal Services of Long Island, a nonprofit that provides immigration assistance and deportation defense services to immigrants, will be coordinating the event.
The assistance, which is free, will be provided from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Portuguese American Club, 17 Third Ave.
Ramos encouraged anyone eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship to attend.
