Contaminated E. Farmingdale site cleaned up

State environmental officials on Thursday announced the cleanup of an East Farmingdale Superfund site once contaminated with heavy metals and solvents.

The Circuitron Corp. built electronic circuit boards at its 82 Milbar Blvd. factory from 1961 through 1986, discharging waste materials into leaching pools. The toxins later seeped into the ground and left hundreds of chemical containers when it abandoned the property and filed for bankruptcy protection, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

To clean up the site, officials demolished the building, removed contaminated soil and installed a groundwater treatment system.

Health risk to the public is minimal, according to a DEC assessment, because the site is fenced and mostly paved over. State officials will continue to monitor the site and treat its groundwater.
