Owners of a Commack hotel planning a renovation must remove or replace railroad ties as part of a property cleanup before Smithtown planners will consider a requested zoning change, town officials have told the hotel’s attorney.
The broken and dislodged railroad ties at the Courtesy Inn, 1126 Jericho Tpke., was one of five issues cited in a memo to the hotel’s owners from the Smithtown planning department. The hotel is seeking a zoning change as part of a plan to re-christen the hotel as All Seasons Motor Lodge.
The purpose of the railroad ties is unclear, but they may have been used for landscaping, Smithtown planning director Frank DeRubeis said.
The hotel’s owner, All Seasons Motor Lodge Inc., is seeking to rezone part of the 6.5-acre property that is occupied by part of the inn even though it is zoned for a residence.
In addition to removing and replacing railroad ties, the hotel must clear trash and other debris; relocate trash containers to the commercially zoned portion of the property; move playground equipment 100 feet from the south property line; and realign lighting so it does not shine on neighboring properties. The memo was discussed at a planning board meeting Wednesday night.
Commack attorney Vincent Trimarco, who represents the hotel, said he would give the memo to the hotel's owners.
