Laura Maier grew up on ice cream from the Dairy Queen in her hometown of Old Tappan, N.J.
But after moving to Massapequa nine years ago and finding the franchise didn’t exist on Long Island, she decided she wanted to leave the health care field and open her own business.
That dream has finally come true, and Maier expects to open Long Island’s only Dairy Queen Grill & Chill, at 5366 Sunrise Hwy. in Massapequa next month.
“I’ve loved the product since I was a child and it just made sense to bring one to my home on Long Island,” said Maier, 34, of Massapequa. “We needed one out here.”
Replacing a former Burger King, The Dairy Queen Grill & Chill is expected to open June 5, offering 50 percent off ice cream cakes. The franchise is hiring hospitality, grill and chill staff, a cake decorator, shift leader and an assistant manager.
“We’ve gotten an overwhelmingly positive response from people,” she said. “It’s going to be a fun, relaxing atmosphere with free Wi-Fi, television and couches near a fireplace.”
It will have a 90-person seating area and a drive-through window. The Dairy Queen Grill & Chill offers burgers, chicken sandwiches, chicken strips, kids meals and ice cream.
Maier eventually plans on expanding the franchise across Long Island.
“We really have something for everybody,” Maier said. “I’m so excited to open in June. It’s neat to see my dream finally come to reality. This just seemed like a good fit.”
