No one can accuse Shelter Island Councilman Peter Reich of using his influence to get things done.

Reich, who is liaison to the town’s Waterways Management Advisory Council, had applied to Shelter Island for a permit that would allow him to use a piling to moor his boat. When the matter came up for a vote on Friday, he briefly walked out, then sat in the audience and abstained as the board voted, 4-0, to approve his request.

The approval was a long time coming. Reich had applied for a mooring permit more than a decade ago. But when he no longer needed the permit, the application was left in legal limbo. His recent request to take over a mooring being abandoned by another town resident reactivated his application.

“Things kind of slip,” he said after the vote.
