Dedication of garden as 9/11 memorial

Plainview-Old Bethpage residents will gather Sunday to dedicate a new Sept. 11, 2001, memorial garden featuring a section of steel from the fallen World Trade Center towers.

The Concerned Citizens of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Community received the artifact earlier this year and worked with the Town of Oyster Bay to incorporate it into a permanent memorial at the corner of Old Country Road and Hope Drive in Plainview.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has provided similar sections of steel to hundreds of municipalities, fire stations and civic groups across the region and the country.

Nearly 40 Long Island communities have received, or are scheduled to receive, the beams for memorial use. Officials in Plainview said the application and award process took two years.

Memorial dedication and public viewing will take place at 12:15 p.m. For more information, visit concernedcitizenspob.org.
