The DNA Learning Center at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory has been awarded a prize by the magazine Science for creating an online teaching tool that educates students and teachers about genetics and other sciences.
The center was awarded the Science Prize for Online Resources in Education, an award established in 2009 to recognize achievements in online science education.
The DNA Learning Center’s website was created in 1996 as a resource for students and teachers to learn about concepts in DNA. It has since expanded into 18 sites involving animation, interviews and interactive “textbooks” to teach genetic science concepts.
The site attracted more than 7 million visits at its peak in 2007.
An essay about the DNA Learning Center appeared in the Dec. 23 issue of Science.
