National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, and several hospitals and police and fire departments across Long Island will be providing locations where residents can dispose of unused and unwanted drugs.
The second annual initiative seeks to prevent pill abuse and theft. Leftover pills that “languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse,” according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.
All take-back events run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To find a location near you, go to the DEA’s website.
The first nationwide take-back day was held in 2010, when more than 3,000 state and local law enforcement agencies participated, collecting more than 121 tons of pills, according to the DEA.
