E. Meadow library hosts science exhibit

The East Meadow Public Library is one of 10 libraries nationwide chosen to host an interactive traveling exhibition called “Discover Earth: A Century of Change.”

The American Library Association announced recently that it chose East Meadow from more than 70 applicants.

The exhibit will tour from January 2012 to December 2013, visiting each of the 10 sites for eight weeks. It will focus on local earth science topics, such as weather, the water cycle and ecosystem changes. Each site will receive a grant of $1,000 to support public programs related to the exhibition.

The East Meadow Public Library will receive a permanent weather station that will enable students to collect data and participate in forecasting local weather by linking to local media outlets, library officials said.

The exhibit, supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation, is part of the STAR Library Education Network led by the National Center for Interactive Learning at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo. Exhibit partners include the American Library Association, the Lunar and Planetary Institute and the National Girls Collaborative Project.
