New lacrosse fields were officially dedicated by the East Islip Lacrosse League on Friday and one of the fields was named in memory of a 10-year-old who died of a brain tumor two years ago.
Christian James Koehler was a member of the lacrosse league. His parents, Christian and Janine Koehler, along with his sister, Allison, and his brother, Anthony, joined friends, family, teammates, league members and Town of Islip officials for the unveiling of a memorial sign bearing his name. Officials presented a town proclamation to the Koehler family.
In a statement, Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt, who recommended dedicating a field to Christian, said it was fitting to memorialize his love of the sport and East Islip’s love for him: “He truly was a beautiful boy.”
Councilman John Edwards, who worked with Islip’s Parks Department to establish the new fields at the East Islip Marina, said the lacrosse players now have what they “can truly call their home field.”
He said he hoped the recognition “can help in some small way to comfort the Koehler family and the East Islip community.”
