A 9/11 first responder who died last year was remembered by the Town of Hempstead on Saturday with the unveiling of a commemorative street sign dedicated in his name.

The sign at the intersection of Corey Lane and Newbridge Road in East Meadow honors Francis T. Pitone, a longtime East Meadow resident who died in August 2013.

Town officials including Supervisor Kate Murray were on hand along with family members to honor the former NYPD officer, who worked extensively both at Ground Zero and at Fresh Kills Landfill in Staten Island, where debris and remains were transported.
