Elda Moreira and her 5-year-old twin daughters Sandy and Estefany have been living at a friend’s house in Huntington since their home on 11th Street in Huntington Station was damaged by a fire on Aug. 10.
Moreira, 40, shared the home with friends Edwin Franco, 26, his wife Sylvia Duran, 25, and their son Vladimir Franco, 7, who are also currently living at another home with friends.
To help them all get back into a place of their own, the nonprofit Friends of Huntington Station Latin Quarter held a fund drive Sunday at the Huntington Station Sports Family Fun Center.
“Their home is not livable. There is no electrical power and all of their furniture is waterlogged. They have no insurance to replace anything,” said Friends of Huntington Station Latin Quarter president and co-founder Edwin Perez. “We want to raise enough to cover the cost of an apartment — two months’ security and one month’s rent. We also want to get enough furniture for the two families."
Estefany has Down syndrome, and Sylvia, who was born in El Salvador, has temporary residency, making it difficult to land a steady job, she said. Edwin Franco works as a waiter at Almarco’s in Huntington.
Perez said the goal is to raise $10,000.
The event, which offered raffles and restaurant gift certificates, as well as tickets to music acts at the Paramount Theater in Huntington, raised $1,450.
Also, Matthew Dellaratta, president of Get Moving USA moving company and his wife Deborah Soehngen, of Medford, donated a bedroom set and a sofa for the families.
Donations may be sent to Friends of Huntington Station Latin Quarter, 40 North Lane, Huntington, NY 11743, or visit www.hslq.org.
