Farmingdale students help in meds disposal effort

Members of Farmingdale High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions are helping to rid the community of expired or unused prescription or non-prescription drugs.

The SADD chapter is helping Nassau County police hold a two-night “Shed the Meds” program at the high school. Anyone with medication to drop off can bring it to Farmingdale High School from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Monday.

All drops are anonymous and, afterward, police will destroy all medications.

“Shed the Meds” started as a way to reduce the amount of unnecessary medications lying around. Often, they are flushed down a toilet or drain, which pollutes the water supply, or end up in the hand of children or teenagers, according to a news release from the school district.

The group will hold another drop-off night on Tuesday, Nov. 30.

Farmingdale High School is located at 150 Lincoln St., Farmingdale.
