Work to put up barrier fencing on the south side of Main Street in Smithtown has finally gotten under way. The safety measures were decided on after 11-year-old Courtney Sipes was hit and killed by a car.
The driver who hit her, Maureen Lambert, pleaded guilty Monday to being high on heroin when she hit Sipes.
State Department of Transportation workers at the site asked the owners of Cornet Music, across the street, to hold onto some of the many teddy bears and other items in the memorial at the site and are working around the remainder.
Sipes was coming out of Cornet when she was hit.
