Five of Halesite Fire Department’s members recently became emergency medical technicians.
Carolyn Corkett, Jessica Kitzen, Stephen Medici, Lucy Oppenheim and Jason Oppenheim passed the state’s Basic EMT-D. They had joined the fire department on Sept. 18, 2011, and started their EMT training on Nov. 2, 2011.
The five were part of one of the largest recruitment classes for the Halesite department, which has seen membership grow more than 20 percent in the past year, according to its website.
“With five of our members getting their EMT certifications this month, Halesite will have a total of 28 EMTs by August,” First Asst. Chief Dan McConnell said. “This represents a record for the Halesite Fire Department and is up nearly one-third from the year before.”
Halesite’s current recruitment drive is to culminate in an open house on July 28 from 10 a.m. to noon.
