Floral Park Village again has been awarded with the Tree City USA community distinction.
For 15 consecutive years, the village has earned this national designation by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to urban forestry.
“Our trees are a beautiful and majestic renewable resource as this year we again planted over 120 trees throughout the village,” said Village Mayor Thomas J. Tweedy during Tuesday’s board of trustees meeting. “The value of our homes are indeed enhanced and our lives enriched by nature’s carbon dioxide filter.”
At the meeting, the board of trustees presented six village police officers with cop of the month awards.
The officers received the awards for their police tactics, professionalism and bravery, the mayor said. They got a standing ovation from friends and family, who filled the room in support.
Police officers Christopher Timm, Joseph Lauria, Robert King and Sgt. William Doherty were honored for apprehending a man in January who had fired a shot in the direction of his wife inside their apartment.
Police officers Robert Pedley and Brian Naughton were recognized for stopping a man in February who was armed and who had made death threats against his former girlfriend and her family.
“They are a fine example of the police operating in a professional manner,” Tweedy said.
