An open house about a North Hempstead taxi service for residents 60 and older will be held June 24 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center in East Hills.

The program, called Project Independence, offers residents reduced fares for nonemergency medical visits.

It aims to give older residents access to health screenings, exercise programs, support groups and educational opportunities. Riders call the town’s 311 hotline to schedule a ride and pay half of a discounted fare. The town pays the rest.

The town recently added a fourth office for the program, in Roslyn.

Trips within North Hempstead town and Garden City, plus the Queens entrance of the North Shore-LIJ Hospital, are covered.
