Free taxis offered for tipsy revelers

Six cab companies in Nassau County and eastern Queens will offer free rides through Jan. 1 to those who might overindulge in holiday cheer.

The offer of free rides, which began Tuesday, means there is no acceptable excuse for drunken driving, said Nassau County police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey in a news release.

Ollie's Taxi & Airport Service, All Island Transportation, Taxi Latino, Luxury Transportation, Glen Belle Car Service and Delux Transportation are the six cab companies offering the free rides, the release said.

Anyone needing a free ride home after drinking at a tavern, bar, restaurant or catering hall through the new year is eligible, the release said, by calling 516-326-9090.

"We want all of our residents and customers to be safe over the holiday season," said Marianne Blessinger, president of Ollie's, in a statement. "Our goal is to prevent or stop any horrible tragedies."

The release said those who use the service also can get a free ride back to their vehicles the next day.

Mulvey called the gesture by the companies a "generous offer of public service."
