Garden City residents can thank recent college grad Tracy Ridgway for the village's new efforts to reach out on the Web.

The village started Facebook and Twitter accounts about three weeks ago after a conversation between Ridgway and her father, village Clerk Brian Ridgway.

”It was just quite clear that they are communicating so much with Internet devices,” he said. “The other day I heard that the Queen of England is using Facebook.”

Ridgeway said the goal is to have constant one-way communication with residents and visitors.

Currently, the village’s Facebook page features pictures from Veterans Day, Fire Prevention Day and Memorial Day.

Ridgeway said future tweets are expected to advertise events like the Garden City Hotel Christmas tree lighting, the village Christmas tree lighting and maybe even a tweet that wishes residents and visitors a Happy Thanksgiving.

As of noon on Tuesday the village had seven followers on Twitter (twitter.com/villageofgc) and 107 “likes” on Facebook (facebook.com/villageofgc).
