Cleanup at a Superfund site on the grounds of a former termite extermination facility in Garden City Park has been completed, the state Department of Environmental Conservation reported.
The one-third-acre site at 131 Herricks Rd. housed Fumex Sanitation from 1952 to 1992. Tests revealed chlordane and other pesticides had contaminated soil and groundwater beneath the site and a neighboring yard.
Cleanup work began in September 2010, and more than 760 tons of contaminated soil were removed at the site and off-site, and replaced with clean fill. An on-site dry well and new stormwater management system were installed. An off-site underground storage tank was also removed, the DEC said.
The state is completing a final engineering report. Long-term site management will include groundwater sampling and easements to prevent potential exposure to residual soil contamination.
